What is CounterCurrent?

CounterCurrent is a route optimisation service that helps vessels save fuel by making subtle adjustments to their planned route based on ocean currents. It works alongside your existing weather routing, fine-tuning your existing routes.

You upload your planned route (from your weather routing provider or voyage planning system), and CounterCurrent analyses ocean currents along that route. Every six hours, it produces an updated recommendation covering the next 24–36 hours, showing small deviations that take advantage of favourable currents or avoid opposing ones. These are subtle course adjustments, not wholesale route changes.

When you log in at app.countercurrent.ai, you get three things:

Forecasts Sensors Route plans
A map showing your planned route, your current position, and the recommended route highlighted in orange. Animated current data is overlaid so you can see why a deviation is being suggested. You can download the recommended route in standard file formats for use on your bridge systems. If your vessel has CounterCurrent’s onboard Triton sensors, you can view real-time and historical weather observations (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind) in chart, table, or map form. Data can be downloaded as a spreadsheet for reporting. Upload new route plans at any time as your voyage progresses. The system accepts common formats including CSV coordinates, StormGeo CSV, and RTZ files.

The following guide covers logging into the app, uploading your first route plan, viewing your first forecast, and viewing the sensor dashboard.
